What is Nutrigenomics?

Nutrigenomics is an exciting area in nutritional health that uses the science of how your own genes work together with nutrients from your diet to influence your health and well being. Based on scientific evidence, this test covers a panel of 45 nutrition and lifestyle genes that help you make decisions and take action to improve your nutritional health and wellness in specific areas of nutrient metabolism, managing weight, heart health, food intolerances, eating habits, and physical activity.

Have you wondered why some of us can handle certain foods without any problem and others have difficulty?

The answer may be in your genes!

For example, science shows that some people have a CAFFEINE gene variant that makes them slow metabolizers of caffeine. This increases their risk of having a heart attack with regular intake of 2 or more cups of coffee per day. On the other hand those who are fast caffeine metabolizers do not seem to have an increased risk of heart attacks at any level of coffee intake.

Similarly, some people have the GLUTEN gene variants that put them at high, medium, or low risk for gluten intolerance or have a LACTOSE gene variation where their body is not able to make lactase, the enzyme needed to break down lactose, the sugar in milk. This can cause uncomfortable digestive symptoms such as gas, stomach upset and runny stools.

How can the Nutrigenomix test help me?

Knowing your personal NUTRITIONAL genetic profile, risks, and strengths will allow you to adjust your NUTRITIONAL approach to your health. For example, having a high risk profile to GLUTEN can help you modify your dietary approach to gluten containing foods. Individuals with certain gene type of vitamin C may make them more vulnerable to vitamin C deficiency. These individuals may need more vitamin C in their diet to ensure they have healthy levels.

How often do I need the Nutrigenomix test?

This is a ONE TIME test for the 45-gene panel that is currently offered. As you inherit your genes for life you only require the test once. However, as other genes and their relation with other nutrients are established, you can get tested for the additional genes when these tests become available.
